The Island
The Island is an on-going project documenting life on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The long and narrow string of barrier islands for many is a vacation destination. For me it is much more. It is a place where I fell in love, married and am now trying to discover the peculiar qualities that make me so fascinated by this skinny strip of land sitting out in the Atlantic. The Island is my connection to a place that like the tide has its highs and lows. Home to fishermen, surfers, beach bums, and retirees this is the beginning of what will be a life-long documentation of an ever changing island.

Tim Gruber is a native of Minnesota where he grew up in a tiny town with a population of 554. Thanks to that small town in the famed Lake Wobegon region Tim had plenty of time to hone his childlike curiosity. Something he still carries with him everyday he’s out shooting.

Tim considers himself a storyteller and works to tell a story with every photo he makes.

Tim is a grad of the graduate program at Ohio University’s School of Visual Communication. Tim’s photos and multimedia have been honored by the Communication Arts Photography Annual, Magenta’s Flash Forward Emerging Photographer, The New York Photo Awards, Pictures of the Year International(POYi), The NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism(BOP), The Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar and many more.
