Nathaniel Philbrick's In the Heart of the Sea:

The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex was a damn good story, but it played a more important role in my psyche. Before reading the book, my perspective of how humans lived just under two centuries ago was naïve. My self-centered reality blocked out the existence of a past.

Before petroleum there was whale oil. Boil down the blubber of a sperm whale and you've got a savory oil to light hundreds of households. Just before we slaughtered the whales of the world into extinction, we discovered a cheaper way to illuminate our lanterns, kerosene. Ahh.. the Age of Illumination.

Now here we are.

Jim grew up in between two pig farms on the East Coast. One is now a 3000squarefoothome subdivision, and the other is soon to be an 18 hole golf course.

Jim has just finished his master's degree in photography with the School of Visual Communication. He is about to move to Saudi Arabia, and his garden is full of weeds.
